Short answer: Ether can earn a place in a UK portfolio as a small, long-horizon holding, but 2026 has been a tough year to own it. ETH was worth about £2,032 on 6 Oct 2026 (CoinGecko), 44.9% below its sterling record of £3,685.50 from 24 Aug 2025 and 41.6% lower than a year earlier, while the FTSE 100 gained 11.2%. Unlike XRP, ether is one of only two coins UK retail investors can buy through a London-listed crypto ETN, so it can sit in an ordinary investment account or a SIPP; new ISA money must go through an Innovative Finance ISA. The network still leads on stablecoins and tokenised assets, but fees on its main chain have collapsed and its supply is growing again.

Is Ethereum a good investment for UK investors in 2026? #

Ethereum is not a company, so there are no earnings or dividends to value. What it offers instead is measurable activity: fees paid to use the network, a staking reward for helping secure it, and a supply that shrinks or expands with demand. None of that reaches you as a holder the way a dividend would.

For sterling investors the past year has hurt. ETH’s lowest daily close in pounds was about £1,176 in early June 2026; it has climbed roughly 73% since, yet sits far below its level a year ago. Bitcoin fell 30.6% in sterling over the same period, so ether lagged both UK shares and the largest crypto asset. Our US edition of this guide covers American ETFs and tax; this one focuses on what you can do from the UK.

What is the bull case for Ethereum? #

Supporters see Ethereum as the main settlement layer for digital dollars and tokenised securities, with ETH as the asset that secures it.

  • Stablecoins live there. Ethereum hosted $146.5bn of stablecoins on 6 Oct 2026, 47.6% of a $307.6bn market, against Tron’s $94.8bn and Solana’s $16.8bn (DefiLlama). It also holds about $54bn of DeFi deposits, roughly eight times Solana.
  • So does tokenised finance. Of the $38.84bn of tokenised real-world assets outside stablecoins tracked by RWA.xyz, such as Treasury funds and private credit, Ethereum’s main chain carried $16.67bn, around 43%.
  • Usage is rising. 21Shares, an ether ETN issuer, reported monthly active addresses up 15% year on year at 8.4 million in its H1 2026 review.
  • It pays a yield. Staked ETH earns roughly 2.6% a year including tips and MEV (payments for ordering transactions), per ultrasound.money data, paid in new ETH rather than cash. Bitcoin offers nothing comparable.
  • Big buyers have arrived in America. US spot ether ETFs held $17.69bn after $13.91bn of net inflows by 5 Oct, according to SoSoValue figures reported by ChainCatcher. BitMine Immersion reported 6,016,414 ETH on 4 Oct, 4.9% of supply, and SharpLink disclosed 892,976 ETH and equivalents on 5 Oct.
  • Upgrades keep landing. Pectra (May 2025) and Fusaka (December 2025) raised validator limits and expanded the data space layer 2s rely on. Glamsterdam is “expected on mainnet Q4 2026”, date unconfirmed, says ethereum.org.

What is the bear case for Ethereum? #

The central worry is that Ethereum’s scaling plan has drained value from ETH itself.

  • Fees migrated to layer 2s. Networks such as Base and Arbitrum carry most retail activity and post data back to Ethereum cheaply. By our sum of DefiLlama data, base-layer fees fell from about $9.9bn in 2021 to $523m in 2025 and roughly $130m so far in 2026.
  • Supply is growing. Part of every fee is burned, and when the chain was busy that shrank supply to a low near 120.06m ETH in April 2024. Over the past 30 days issuance ran at about 1.08m ETH a year against a burn of roughly 26,000, per ultrasound.money. The “ultrasound money” pitch no longer matches the data.
  • Solana has caught up on activity. On 6 Oct DefiLlama showed Solana taking more daily chain fees than Ethereum ($1.04m against $813,000) with about seven times the active addresses.
  • Flows can reverse. US ether ETFs lost $138m in the week to 2 Oct, and SharpLink’s shares traded at 0.84 times its own measure of net asset value on 6 Oct. In Washington, the CLARITY Act, a crypto market-structure bill, failed a Senate procedural vote 49–50 on 15 Sep 2026.
  • Crashes are deep. Based on CoinGecko daily closes in dollars, ether fell 94.2% in 2018, 79.3% in 2021–22 and 67.5% from its August 2025 peak to its June 2026 low.
  • You carry dollar risk. ETH is priced in dollars, so your sterling return depends on the exchange rate too. This year the effect was small (−41.6% in pounds against −42.5% in dollars), but it can cut either way.

How can UK investors buy Ethereum? #

There are three practical routes: the coin itself, a London-listed note backed by ether, or shares in companies that hold it.

Buying ETH on an FCA-registered exchange #

Owning the coin gives you the asset outright, 24/7 trading, no annual product fee and the option to stake. Use a firm on the FCA’s register of cryptoasset businesses, but understand what that means: registration under the Money Laundering Regulations is an anti-money-laundering check, not investor protection. The register warns that because most cryptoassets are not specified investments, “it is unlikely that customers will have access to the Financial Ombudsman or the FSCS.”

The rules are tightening. The FCA published final crypto rules on 30 Jun 2026, noting that crypto “remains high-risk”. Firms must apply for full authorisation through a gateway open from 30 Sep 2026 to 28 Feb 2027; registrations will not convert automatically, and the regime starts on 25 Oct 2027. Our UK crypto regulation guide explains what changes.

Buying a London-listed ether ETN #

Since 8 Oct 2025, UK retail investors have been able to buy crypto exchange-traded notes (cETNs) on a UK Recognised Investment Exchange, and the London Stock Exchange admits only bitcoin and ether notes. A cETN is a debt security that trades like a share, backed by ether held with a custodian. Platforms usually require an appropriateness test and often a 24-hour cooling-off period; our crypto ETF UK guide covers which ones offer them.

The fee is only half the comparison. CoinShares charges nothing and quotes staking rewards of 1.25% a year to holders; Bitwise’s staking note shows a net reward of 1.85% against its 0.65% fee; WisdomTree stakes part of its ether and reports a rolling one-year staking return of 0.94%. With the network paying roughly 2.6%, every issuer keeps a slice, and each measures it differently. Two smaller points: CoinShares’ dollar line trades as ETHE, the same symbol as Grayscale’s US fund, and Global X’s note is tiny, which can mean wider spreads. For a wider view of ether products across Europe, see ETP Insider’s Ethereum ETP guide.

Buying shares in ether treasury companies #

BitMine (BMNR) and SharpLink (SBET), both US-listed, hold ETH on their balance sheets and are generally available on UK platforms that offer US shares. You take on equity risk on top of ether’s price: dilution, borrowing and swings between a premium and a discount to holdings. Our explainer on crypto treasury stocks covers how they work.

What about US Ethereum ETFs? #

ETHA and other US spot ether ETFs are generally not available to UK retail investors on UK platforms. A London-listed cETN is the nearest equivalent.

Can I hold Ethereum in an ISA or SIPP? #

Not the coin, but ether ETNs, with conditions. HMRC’s cETN policy note let cETNs into stocks and shares ISAs from 8 Oct 2025. From 6 Apr 2026, SI 2026/248 moved them to the innovative finance component, so new purchases are possible only through an Innovative Finance ISA, and few providers offer one with cETNs. Notes held in a stocks and shares ISA immediately before 6 April 2026 can stay.

SIPPs are simpler: pension schemes may hold cETNs from 8 Oct 2025, according to HMRC. 21Shares lists Hargreaves Lansdown, AJ Bell, Revolut and Interactive Brokers among platforms offering ETHC and says SIPP eligibility varies by provider.

In any wrapper, there is no FSCS safety net. When it opened retail access, the FCA said “there won’t be coverage from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme”.

How is Ethereum taxed in the UK? #

General information, not tax advice; our UK crypto tax guide has the detail.

  • Capital gains tax. Selling ETH, swapping it for another token or spending it is a disposal. Gains above the £3,000 annual exempt amount are taxed at 18% or 24%, depending on your income.
  • Staking rewards are income. HMRC taxes them at their sterling value on receipt, and a later sale can trigger CGT too.
  • cETNs follow securities rules. In a general account, selling a note is a CGT disposal like selling a share. Staking notes reinvest rewards inside the note; check the issuer’s UK tax information. ISAs and SIPPs shelter gains.
  • HMRC can see your trades. UK crypto platforms have collected customer and transaction data for HMRC since 1 Jan 2026, so keep records of every purchase and disposal.

Who might Ethereum suit, and who should avoid it? #

It might suit you if:

  • You want crypto beyond bitcoin and accept that ether’s case rests on usage, not scarcity.
  • You can sit through a fall of two-thirds or more, with a horizon of five years or longer.
  • You understand how much of the staking yield an ETN passes on.

You should probably avoid it if:

  • You need the money within a few years or rely on steady income.
  • You want FSCS protection or a straightforward tax-free wrapper.
  • You would pay 1.49% a year when notes on the same asset charge 0.10% or nothing.

On sizing, 21Shares’ UK page relays the FCA’s suggestion that high-risk investments such as cETNs should make up less than 10% of a retail portfolio, and issuers including 21Shares and WisdomTree carry the warning: “Don’t invest unless you’re prepared to lose all the money you invest.” Frameworks that include crypto usually keep it to a low single-digit share in total. Set your number before buying and rebalance on a schedule.

FAQ #

Is Ethereum a good long-term investment? It has stronger foundations than most crypto assets: the largest stablecoin and DeFi base, a staking yield and regulated products in London and New York. But its value capture is in doubt while base-layer fees stay low, and it lost between 67% and 94% in each of its last three bear markets. Treat it as a long-term speculative holding.

Can I buy an Ethereum ETF in the UK? Not a US spot ETF. You can buy a London-listed ether ETN instead, such as CoinShares’ ETHP, 21Shares’ ETHC or WisdomTree’s WETP, through many large UK platforms.

Can I hold Ethereum in an ISA? Not the coin. Ether ETNs bought from 6 Apr 2026 can only go in an Innovative Finance ISA; notes already in a stocks and shares ISA before then can stay. Ether ETNs can also go in a SIPP.

How is Ethereum taxed in the UK? Capital gains tax at 18% or 24% on gains above the £3,000 allowance for 2026/27, and income tax on staking rewards at their sterling value when received.

Can Ethereum reach £10,000? We do not forecast prices, but the arithmetic is simple. With about 122.1m ETH in circulation, £10,000 implies a market cap of roughly £1.22trn: about 4.9 times today’s £248bn, around 94% of bitcoin’s current £1.30trn and 2.7 times ether’s sterling record. Supply growth of 0.86% a year raises the bar slightly each year.

Not financial advice. Capital at risk. Crypto is highly volatile and crypto ETNs carry issuer risk. UK access rules can change — check with your broker and a qualified adviser.
