Is XRP a Good Investment? A UK Investor's Guide for 2026
Table of Contents
Short answer: XRP can be a small, high-risk satellite holding for a UK investor, but it is not an investment you can wrap tax-efficiently or buy through a London-listed fund. XRP traded at about $1.48, or £1.12, on 23 Sep 2026 (CoinGecko), with a market cap of $93.22 billion, roughly 59% below its $3.65 peak of July 2025. The London Stock Exchange only admits bitcoin and ether crypto ETNs for retail investors, so the only UK route is buying the token itself through a crypto firm registered with the FCA. That means no ISA, no FSCS protection and capital gains tax on your profits. Meanwhile, the US market-structure bill that XRP bulls were counting on stalled in the Senate on 15 September.
Is XRP a good investment for UK investors? #
It depends on why you want it, and on how much you are prepared to lose. XRP is the fifth-largest crypto asset by market cap. It pays no staking yield, so any return comes from the price alone. It moves sharply: XRP fell about 5.6% in the 24 hours to the evening of 23 Sep 2026 after rising about 13.9% over the previous seven days, according to CoinGecko.
For a UK investor there is also a practical point that US readers do not face. In the US you can buy an XRP ETF in an ordinary brokerage account. In the UK you cannot buy any XRP fund or note as a retail investor. Our US edition of this guide covers the ETF route in detail; this version focuses on what British investors can actually do.

Can I buy an XRP ETF or ETN in the UK? #
No, not as a retail investor. Since 8 Oct 2025 the FCA has allowed retail investors to buy crypto exchange-traded notes, but only notes admitted to the FCA’s Official List and traded on a UK Recognised Investment Exchange. The London Stock Exchange’s admission factsheet for crypto ETNs limits eligible underlyings to bitcoin and ether. By 6 Nov 2025 the LSE had listed 19 crypto ETNs from 9 issuers, every one of them backed by bitcoin or ether.
Several things follow:
- European XRP ETPs are out of reach. Products from issuers such as 21Shares and WisdomTree trade on European exchanges, not on a UK Recognised Investment Exchange, so UK retail platforms do not offer them.
- Some brokers offer XRP notes to professional clients only. Saxo’s UK site, for example, lists wider crypto ETN access, including XRP, for clients classed as professional. Retail clients get bitcoin and ether.
- US XRP ETFs are generally not available to UK retail investors on UK platforms, even though they trade freely in American brokerage accounts.
The LSE says it may expand the list of eligible cryptoassets at its discretion, but it has not done so. If you want to understand the note structure itself, see our explainer on what an ETN is and our crypto ETN UK guide.
How can I buy XRP in the UK? #
Directly, through a crypto firm on the FCA’s register of cryptoasset businesses. Registration under the Money Laundering Regulations is an anti-money-laundering check. It is not full FCA authorisation, and the FCA register warns that cryptoasset services are unlikely to be covered by the Financial Ombudsman Service or the FSCS.
| Firm (UK entity) | On FCA crypto register since | XRP for UK users |

| IG (IG Digital Assets Limited) | 30 Sep 2025 | Yes: one of 57 assets on IG Crypto |

IG’s crypto service is a useful example of what the process looks like for a mainstream UK broker. According to IG’s help pages, you take an eight-question appropriateness quiz with a 75% pass mark, then wait 24 hours before your first trade. Coins other than bitcoin, ether and Solana carry a 1.49% spread, and custody is handled by Coinbase Prime. IG also states that crypto cannot be held in an ISA or a SIPP.
Whichever firm you use, check its current register entry, its fees and spreads, and where your coins are held.
Can I hold XRP in an ISA or SIPP? #
No. Cryptoassets themselves are not qualifying ISA investments. Even the crypto ETNs that UK retail can buy are now restricted: since 6 Apr 2026, under SI 2026/248, new purchases of crypto ETNs can only go into an Innovative Finance ISA, not a stocks and shares ISA. Those notes are bitcoin and ether only, so none of this opens a tax-free route to XRP. The same applies to SIPPs: some platforms allow bitcoin and ether ETNs in a SIPP, but there is no XRP equivalent. Our bitcoin ETN guide covers what is available.
What is the bull case for XRP? #
US institutional demand has kept arriving. The six US spot XRP ETFs took in a net $9.56 million in the week of 14 to 18 September, even through the Senate vote, and another $20.02 million on 22 September. Total net assets were about $1.73 billion on that date. These figures come from SoSoValue data as relayed by secondary outlets, and we could not check them against a primary source.
Ripple is building a regulated business, including in the UK. On 9 Jan 2026 Ripple announced it had received an FCA electronic money institution licence and cryptoasset registration for Ripple Payments. Its dollar stablecoin, RLUSD, had a market cap of about $2.37 billion on 23 Sep 2026 (CoinGecko). In the US, Ripple holds conditional OCC approval for a national trust bank.
Room to recover. At about 59% below its 2025 high, bulls argue that a stronger crypto market could lift XRP back towards previous levels.
What is the bear case for XRP? #
No yield. The XRP Ledger has no staking, so there is no income to anchor the valuation. You are relying entirely on someone paying more later.
Supply overhang. About 62.88 billion XRP circulate out of a 100 billion maximum. On-chain trackers report that Ripple’s escrow released 1 billion XRP on 1 Sep 2026, with around 31 billion still locked. Ripple usually re-locks most of each monthly release, but the remaining supply sits over the market.
Ripple’s success is not XRP’s success. RLUSD, the FCA-licensed payments business and the prime brokerage arm do not require anyone to buy XRP.
US policy has stalled (see below).
| Bull case | Supporting data | Bear case | Supporting data |
|---|---|---|---|
| US ETF demand | ~$1.73B net assets (22 Sep, reported) | No UK fund route | LSE admits BTC/ETH ETNs only |
| Ripple’s UK licence | FCA EMI + crypto registration (9 Jan 2026) | No yield | No staking on the XRP Ledger |
| Large and liquid | Rank 5, $93.22B market cap | Supply overhang | ~62.88B of 100B circulating |
| Well below peak | ~59% under $3.65 | US bill stalled | Senate cloture failed 49–50 |
What does the CLARITY Act vote mean for XRP? #
The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (H.R. 3633) would set rules for how US crypto markets are regulated and how oversight is split between the SEC and the CFTC. The House passed it in July 2025. On 15 Sep 2026 the Senate voted 49–50 on cloture on the motion to proceed, short of the 60 votes needed. Senator Thom Tillis entered a motion to reconsider, which keeps the bill alive procedurally. Congress.gov records no further action between 16 and 23 September. Press reports say the dispute centred on ethics provisions covering officials’ crypto holdings, and that any new attempt is more likely after the November midterms.
XRP fell from a close of about $1.42 on 14 September to about $1.28 on 15 September, according to CoinMarketCap. It has since recovered. The bill did not decide whether XRP is legal to trade; the 2023 court ruling and the end of the SEC case in 2025 dealt with that. What it would have added is a clearer US rulebook, and that is now delayed.
Could XRP reach £10? #
We do not forecast prices, but here is the arithmetic. With about 62.88 billion XRP circulating, £10 implies a market cap of about £629 billion, nearly nine times today’s £70.4 billion. If the full 100 billion supply were in circulation, £10 would mean £1 trillion. That would require buying on a scale far beyond the roughly $1.7 billion that has gone into US XRP ETFs so far. Treat “£10 XRP” as a scenario that needs a story, not a target.
How is XRP taxed in the UK? #
General information; your position depends on your circumstances.
- Capital gains tax applies when you sell XRP, swap it for another cryptoasset or spend it. Rates are 18% within the basic-rate band and 24% above it, and the annual exempt amount is £3,000 for 2026/27 (GOV.UK).
- Income tax can apply to crypto you receive as a reward. XRP has no native staking, but HMRC treats staking and similar rewards as income at their sterling value when received, and a later sale can create a gain as well.
- Reporting has changed. Under the OECD’s Cryptoasset Reporting Framework, UK crypto service providers have collected user and transaction data since 1 Jan 2026. Their first report, covering calendar 2026, is due to HMRC between 1 Jan and 31 May 2027. HMRC will see your activity, so keep records of every purchase and disposal.
What does the FCA’s new crypto regime change? #
The FCA published its final crypto rules on 30 Jun 2026. Firms that want to keep offering crypto services must apply for full authorisation: the application window opens at 07:00 on 30 Sep 2026 and closes on 28 Feb 2027, and the regime begins on 25 Oct 2027. Existing registration does not convert automatically. For XRP buyers, this means the firms you use today will face stricter conduct and custody rules from late 2027. It does not, by itself, create a UK XRP fund.
