Short answer: Ether has stronger fundamentals than most crypto assets, but in 2026 it is earning far less than its supporters expected. ETH traded at about $2,691 on 6 Oct 2026 (CoinGecko), 45.6% below its $4,946 all-time high of 24 Aug 2025 and down 42.7% over one year, while the S&P 500 rose about 15%. Ethereum still hosts nearly half of all stablecoins and the largest pool of tokenized assets, and staked ETH earns roughly 2.6% a year. But fees on the main network have collapsed as activity moved to layer-2 networks, so ETH supply is growing again, by about 0.86% a year. For most investors it fits as a small, long-horizon satellite holding, not a core one.

Is Ethereum a good investment in 2026? #

Ethereum is easier to analyze than a memecoin because it produces things you can measure: fees, staking rewards, and a supply that rises or falls with use. Even so, ETH holders have no legal claim on anything, and the network’s “revenue” is not paid to you.

ETH peaked in August 2025, fell to a daily close of $1,566 on 25 Jun 2026, and has since recovered about 72% from that low. It has still lagged both bitcoin and US stocks over twelve months. For a wider view of how crypto behaves next to equities, see our guide to crypto vs stocks.

What is the bull case for Ethereum? #

The bull argument is that Ethereum has become the default settlement network for digital dollars and tokenized securities, and that ETH is the asset that secures it.

It is where the dollars live. DefiLlama counted $146.5 billion of stablecoins on Ethereum on 6 Oct 2026, 47.6% of a $307.6 billion market. Tron is second at $94.8 billion and Solana a distant third at $16.8 billion. Ethereum also holds about $54.3 billion of DeFi deposits, roughly eight times Solana’s $6.6 billion (DefiLlama).

Tokenized assets are choosing it too. RWA.xyz tracked $38.84 billion of tokenized real-world assets, such as Treasury funds and private credit, outside stablecoins on 6 Oct 2026. Ethereum’s main network hosts $16.67 billion of that, about 43%, and its layer-2 networks add more.

Usage keeps growing even as fees fall. In its H1 2026 review, 21Shares (which sells an Ethereum ETF) reported monthly active addresses up 15% year on year to 8.4 million. Apps built on Ethereum generated about $7.8 million of fees in the 24 hours to 6 Oct, per DefiLlama, nearly ten times what the base network collected. Bulls argue this activity eventually feeds demand for ETH as collateral and gas.

There is a yield. ETH can be staked to help secure the network. Ultrasound.money’s data put the issuance reward at about 2.5% a year, or about 2.6% with tips and MEV (extra payments from transaction ordering). BitMine reported a seven-day staking yield of 2.63% on 5 Oct. It is paid in newly created ETH, not cash, but bitcoin offers nothing comparable.

Institutional demand is real. US spot ether ETFs had $13.91 billion of cumulative net inflows and $17.69 billion of assets on 5 Oct 2026, about 5.3% of ETH’s market cap, according to SoSoValue data relayed by ChainCatcher. They took in about $980 million in the 30 days to 29 Sep (BeInCrypto via Yahoo Finance) and roughly $1.5 billion year to date (Cointelegraph, 5 Oct).

Treasury companies hold a large slice. BitMine Immersion (BMNR) said it held 6,016,414 ETH as of 4 Oct 2026, 4.9% of supply, with 5.07 million of it staked. SharpLink (SBET) reported 892,976 ETH and ETH equivalents as of 5 Oct. Together that is about 5.7% of all ETH. Our explainer on crypto treasury stocks covers how these companies work.

The roadmap keeps shipping. Pectra went live on 7 May 2025. It raised the maximum validator balance to 2,048 ETH, added smart-account features and doubled blob capacity for layer 2s. Fusaka followed on 3 Dec 2025 with PeerDAS, designed to scale blob space up to eightfold, and a 60 million default gas limit. The next upgrade, Glamsterdam, is “expected on mainnet Q4 2026” with the date “not yet confirmed”, according to ethereum.org. Its Sepolia testnet fork was scheduled for 6 Oct 2026.

What is the bear case for Ethereum? #

The bear argument is that Ethereum’s success at scaling has drained value from ETH itself.

Layer 2s took the fees. Most retail activity now runs on layer-2 networks such as Base and Arbitrum, which post their data back to Ethereum cheaply in “blobs.” Summing DefiLlama’s daily data, Ethereum’s base layer collected about $9.9 billion in fees in 2021, $2.5 billion in 2024, $523 million in 2025 and about $130 million so far in 2026. On 6 Oct it took in about $813,000 for the day.

Supply is inflating again. Ethereum burns part of every transaction fee. When activity is high, the burn can exceed new issuance and supply shrinks. That happened through 2023 and early 2024, and supply bottomed near 120.06 million ETH on 5 Apr 2024, per ultrasound.money. Today the burn is tiny. Over the last 30 days, issuance ran at about 1.08 million ETH a year against a burn of about 26,000, for net supply growth of about 0.86% a year. Supply rose by roughly 994,000 ETH over the past twelve months. The “ultrasound money” pitch no longer matches the data.

Solana is winning on activity. On 6 Oct, DefiLlama showed Solana collecting $1.04 million in chain fees over 24 hours against Ethereum’s $813,000, with 3.1 million active addresses against about 445,000. Over the past year Solana’s chain fees were about $239 million to Ethereum’s $201 million, by our sum of DefiLlama data. Ethereum still dominates on deposits and stablecoins, but the usage gap has closed. Our Solana framework runs the same questions on SOL.

Regulation and flows can turn. The CLARITY Act, the market-structure bill meant to settle which agency oversees most crypto, failed a Senate cloture vote 49–50 on 15 Sep 2026. A law firm analysis by Orrick says passage this Congress now looks unlikely. ETF money also reverses quickly: the funds lost $404.8 million over 15 to 17 Sep and $138 million in the week to 2 Oct. And treasury companies are not guaranteed buyers. SharpLink’s stock traded at 0.84 times its net asset value, as the company measures it, on 6 Oct, which makes selling new shares to buy more ETH harder.

How deep have Ethereum’s crashes been? #

Ether has fallen by two-thirds or more in each of its last three down cycles. Figures below use CoinGecko daily closes.

CyclePeak closeTrough closeDecline
2018$1,448 (12 Jan 2018)$83.76 (14 Dec 2018)−94.2%

If a drop of that size would force you to sell, the position is too large.

How can a US stock investor hold Ethereum? #

Coins on an exchange. Buying ETH directly gives you the asset itself, 24/7 trading, no annual fund fee and the option to stake it yourself. You also take on custody risk and more tax record-keeping.

Spot ETFs. These trade in an ordinary brokerage account during market hours. Our explainer on ETPs vs ETFs covers how the wrappers differ.

ETHA is by far the largest, with $9.94 billion of net assets on 5 Oct 2026. Some funds now stake part of their ETH and pass rewards on, which changes the comparison. ETHB intends to distribute rewards monthly and had 86.9% of its ETH staked on 30 Jun 2026, per its 10-Q. FETH pays rewards in four distributions a year, and TETH pays net rewards in cash at least quarterly. Staked ETH can take time to unlock, and sponsors and staking providers keep a share of the rewards. Our guide to Ethereum staking ETFs compares each fund’s reward cut and payout schedule.

Treasury and crypto stocks. BMNR and SBET offer ETH exposure as equities, with dilution, leverage and swings between premium and discount to their holdings layered on top. See crypto stocks vs bitcoin for how the equity route compares with owning the coin.

How is Ethereum taxed in the US? #

This is general information, not tax advice.

  • Crypto is property. The IRS treats digital assets as property. Selling ETH, swapping it for another token or spending it is a taxable disposal. Gains on coins held more than a year are long-term capital gains; shorter holdings are taxed at ordinary income rates.
  • ETF shares are securities. Selling ETHA, FETH or similar shares produces a capital gain or loss, reported on your broker’s statement like any other fund sale.
  • Staking rewards are income. Under Revenue Ruling 2023-14, rewards are taxable income when you gain control of them, valued at that day’s price. If you own a staking ETF, your share of its rewards is generally taxable too; the fund’s year-end tax documents show how much.
  • Brokers now report. Brokers file Form 1099-DA for digital asset sales from 1 Jan 2025, with cost basis reporting from 1 Jan 2026. Keep your own purchase records anyway.

Who might Ethereum suit, and who should avoid it? #

It might suit you if:

  • You want crypto exposure beyond bitcoin and accept that ETH’s case rests on usage, not scarcity.
  • You can hold through a decline of two-thirds or more, which ETH has suffered three times.
  • You have a horizon of five years or more.
  • You want a staking yield and understand how it is paid and taxed.

You should probably avoid it if:

  • You need the money within a few years, or you need stable income.
  • Your thesis is “ultrasound money”; supply is currently growing.
  • You would buy a treasury stock as a cheap ETH proxy without understanding dilution and NAV discounts.
  • You would pay 2.50% a year for ETHE when funds charging 0.15% to 0.25% hold the same asset.

On sizing: frameworks that include crypto usually keep the total to a low single-digit share of a portfolio, with any single token a slice of that. Decide the number before you buy, and rebalance on a schedule. Our review of whether XRP is a good investment applies the same framework to another large-cap token.

FAQ #

Is Ethereum a good long-term investment? It has stronger fundamentals than most crypto assets: the biggest stablecoin and DeFi base, a staking yield and regulated ETFs. But its value capture is in question while base-layer fees stay low, and it fell between 67% and 94% in each of its last three bear markets. Treat it as a long-term speculative holding.

Is it too late to buy Ethereum? ETH traded 45.6% below its August 2025 high and about 9% below where it began 2026 on 6 Oct. Nobody knows whether that is early or late in a cycle. Buying in fixed amounts over time reduces the risk of entering at a local peak.

Can Ethereum reach $10,000? We do not forecast prices, but the arithmetic is simple. With about 122.1 million ETH outstanding, $10,000 implies a market cap of about $1.22 trillion, roughly 3.7 times today’s $328.6 billion and about 71% of bitcoin’s current $1.72 trillion. It would also be about double ETH’s record high of $4,946. Supply growth of 0.86% a year raises the bar slightly every year.

Ethereum vs Bitcoin: which is better? They are different bets. Bitcoin has a fixed 21 million supply and far larger ETF demand, with $57.8 billion of cumulative inflows per Cointelegraph versus about $13.9 billion for ether. Ether has a staking yield and an application economy but no supply cap. Over the past year bitcoin fell 32.1% and ether 42.7%.

Do Ethereum ETFs pay dividends? Not dividends in the corporate sense. Some staking funds distribute staking rewards in cash: ETHB intends monthly payments, FETH pays four times a year and TETH at least quarterly. ETHA and ETHW do not stake. Payments vary with network rewards and are taxable.

How much ETH do public companies hold? BitMine reported 6,016,414 ETH (4.9% of supply) as of 4 Oct 2026, and SharpLink 892,976 ETH and ETH equivalents as of 5 Oct.
